Like any other pet carrier, there are some things that should be considered when looking at these products, and Pet Gear has addressed these things with their fine products. The main things I consider when looking at the backpack pet carriers are:
Quality- Look for a durable item made from top quality fabric and parts. If it has wheels, make sure that the wheels are strong, especially if using it for air travel. Running through the airport can cause a lot of wear on the wheels. Also, make sure the zippers are heavy duty and will last a long time.
Airline Approved - The Pet Gear I-Go2 backpack dog carriers are approved for use on most airlines, but it is always a must to check with the airline when traveling with one. They are not "guaranteed" to fly like some Sherpa Carriers are, but I have not seen any problems yet (I am also an airline pilot).
Fashion and Comfort - There is no point in having something that is uncomfortable for you or your pet, and it might as well look good too!
In my experience, the benefits of using a backpack pet carrier far outweigh the disadvantages and are well worth it. I actually don't know of any disadvantages personally.
