An electronic dog fence sometimes known as a pet containment system offers an affordable and effective way to keep your pet contained in your yard. These products require that you properly train your pet to use them. If you do not, they will, at the least, be ineffective. Many people have debated whether or not electronic dog fences are safe and humane. This is a debate that will probably go on until the end of time. The answer is really up to each individual pet owner, and all views should be respected.

My view is that any pet product, if used in a harmful way can be inhumane, and most products including a pet containment system can be very effective in achieving the results and relationship with your canine that you both desire. Any product from a basic collar, to a leash, to an electronic dog fence can be improperly used. The outcome lies in the hands of the human in charge. That human should be you, and you should have every desire to have a caring and loving relationship with your canine companion.

Now, most pet products including electronic dog fences and pet containment systems are very safe and effective if the time is taken to properly train your canine. Most all of these products come with great DVDs and training booklets. I grew up with bird hunting dogs and have used electronic products in training them all of my life with great results.

How an Electronic Dog Fence Works:

The principles for electronic pet containment systems, both wireless, and underground, are similar, so this will be a general overview. Specific details for each type and product can be found on the respective pages. An electronic dog fence usually consists of a receiver collar and a transmitter. Your canine wears the receiver collar just like any other collar. The transmitter is mounted in a safe and dry location. The transmitter sends an electronic signal to the collar whenever your pet approaches the boundary you set on your pet containment system.

Should your pet approach the boundary, the first thing the transmitter will emit, is an audio tone. This is a warning and lets your canine know that he or she is approaching the boundary. If your curious friend continues, the electronic dog fence system sends out a static correction, commonly referred to as the "shock". It does not hurt. I have felt it many times. It is just enough to get your attention, but this is where most debates about these and other electronic products are focused, but a good quality pet containment system has a built in safety feature that will stop the static correction if a certain limit is hit. This provides protection should your canine become trapped outside the boundary.

Proper Training is a MUST with Pet Containment Systems:

The protection that is offered by a high quality electronic dog fence is worth the extra money. Pet containment systems are far cheaper than installing traditional fences anyway, even if you choose the best system on the market. Proper training is by far the most essential part of effectively using these products. If you do not have or cannot dedicate yourself to properly training your canine, then an electronic dog fence, or pet containment system may not be the best option for you. There are many great professional trainers ready and willing to help you out if you do not believe the training material and DVDs are enough for your comfort.
